A Nightmare on Elm Street (Review)

Reviewed by Maggie Chung (13 May 2010)

Freddy Krueger played by Jackie Earle Haley

So you're a fan of the original movie and dislikes the idea of a perfect movie being remade. The problem is, Hollywood needs to make money and they're running out of ideas. So they modernize a classic. Will it be a flop? or would it be something for you to have the chance to viw the storyline at a different angle? My two cents - it's not as bad as they said it would be. Yeah maybe not a great idea to disturb a classic, but you've seen how Clash of The Titans was remade into a proper easy flow movie with no still motion choppyness. It's not that bad.

We all know who Freddy Krueger is but if you've been living under a rock all these years, he's the bad guy who appears in people's dreams and kills them in it, effectively at the same time kills them in real life. So the story plot is the same as the original, only difference in this one would be the actors and of course the updated CGI. First thing's first, let's dissect Freddy. In this one, Jackie Earle Haley plays the evil dude. You might remember him in Watchmen where he played the guy in the mask. He was brilliant there and was nominated for an Oscar. However, he's too skinny to be Freddy and his voice is not scary at all, just creepy, and yes, there is a difference between those two words.

Nancy Holbrook played by Rooney Mara

To those who haven't watched the original, the movie tells the story of how Freddy Krueger was made and that old secrets were to be uncovered by the teens in the film. Rooney Mara plays Nancy who is pretty much the lead role in this one, well at least for the second half of the movie. She's perfect for the role and thank goodness she has the looks, otherwise the movie would be so boring for the guys, right boys? Effects are top notch but the one where he appears from the wall is just not convincing enough. The movie isn't scary at all just startling at times. The sound effect can shock you at times and make you jump out of your seat.

Freddy Krueger in action

Overall, it was pretty dissapointing. For a 35 million dollars budget compared to the old one just at 1.8 million dollars, it could have gone way better with better casts. Will give it a 3/5 stars.
